Marijuana Advocates to NYC: Weed Safer Than Binge Drinking

Empire State NORML, New York State's chapter of the marijuana law reform group, convened at City Hall on St. Patrick's Day to support another green initiative. The organization took the moment to point out "healthier" methods of intoxication that getting trashed on the national drinking holiday.

There were over 50,608 arrests in New York city for low-level marijuana possession last year, making it the leading cause for arrest once more. NORML reports that this cost the city about $75 million, while 16% of New Yorkers admitting to binge drinking during a 30 day period in 2010.

As Empire State NORML's appropriately named Legislative Director Doug Greene said, "There is a safer alternative to pools of vomit in the streets." No, it isn't money, but it's still green.
