After losing director Jack Bender last week, Paramount has entered into negotiations with Kenneth Branagh to helm its untitled Jack Ryan reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will star Chris Pine as Ryan, the spy that has been the main character in numerous Tom Clancy novels and big screen adaptations.

The character of Ryan has appeared before in films like The Hunt for the Red October, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears, and has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck respectively. This latest Ryan adventure will reboot the character's origins for a more modern setting, and will be the first not to be based off of any of Clancy's original novels.

Branagh's stock went up in Hollywood after the success of 2011's Thor, and The Hollywood Reporter is saying that studios were impressed with the sophistication that he brought to the movie.
