We love Arkham City as much as anyone, but it's by no means the only version of Batman that would lend itself well to a game. Artist Julie Farrell has posted on her site (By way of Kotaku) several screenshots from what she describes as a cancelled game based on the 1989 DC Elseworlds graphic novel Gotham by Gaslight.

In development by Day One Studios, the company behind F.E.A.R. 3, the game would have been set at the turn of the 20th century. The main villain in the graphic novel was none other than Jack the Ripper. It sounds like a mix of Batman and Sherlock Holmes, and it's a shame we'll never get to play it.

At least we can look at the beautiful work done on the logo and menu screens, though, and even catch a glimpse of the Bat himself in the lower left corner of one shot. Head over to her site for more and let us know in the comments or on Twitter if you'd play a steampunk Batman game.
