"American Idol" Executive Producer Wants President Obama to Sing a Duet With Al Green on the Show

Well, that would be one way of campaigning.

President Obama's mini-performance of Al Green's 1972 hit, "Let's Stay Together" (subliminal campaign messaging?) at the Apollo Theater earlier this month has turned out to be kind of a big deal. First, it boosted sales of Green's original recording on iTunes by 490%, and now it's moved American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to make a pretty ballsy pitch: Obama and Al Green, live on Idol

According to TMZ, Lythgoe heard Obama's rendition of the opening lines from Green's song, and was "blown away" by the President's vocal skills. He took to his Twitter account to pitch the idea to the Prez - we imagine it'd be pretty hard to get an actual meeting with Obama, so this makes sense - tweeting, "@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we'd love to invite you on to #AmericanIdol this Season for a duet with Al Green."

Seems unlikely to actually happen, but it's kind of funny to think about. Would you watch Obama on Idol?
