Robots Could Have Legal Status Because Real Lawyers Are Discussing It

With the increasing inevitability of singularity—the event in which the intelligence of machines matches that of humans—it’s only a matter of time before robots are treated as humans, or at least animals. So, you know, smashing your fax machine a la Office Space could be akin to Vick-style animal cruelty. Maybe.

The University of Miami’s School of Law, is hosting the first ever conference on the legal issues surrounding robots, such as those of “legal or moral responsibility, e.g. relating to autonomous robots or robots capable of exhibiting emergent behavior.” Ahead of the conference in April, the University is seeking submission for both speakers and topics of interest.
