In the next version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 5, the company plans to include a special safety feature in Japanese iPhones that warns of impending earthquakes. The feature will be connected to Japan's earthquake warning system, which Time called "the most advanced earthquake early-warning system in the world", and alert users seconds or minutes before an earthquake is predicted to hit. The only downside is the system may drain the iPhone's battery because it will always be connected to Japan's earthquake warning system. We think it's an even trade-off.
