Seun Anikulapo Kuti is the son of Nigerian musician and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti (the middle name is translated as “he who carries death in his pouch”), whose fusion of jazz, funk, Black Panther ideals and Nigerian polyrhythms transformed Afrobeat in the 1970s.
Kuti’s music and politics enraged the Nigerian government at the time, and he and his family were attacked by soldiers in the large compound they lived in. Along with his brother Femi, Seun has been carrying the fierce legacy his father left, playing with original members of Fela’s Egypt ’80 group and leading them with the same charisma and fury as his dad.
