These two Brainfeeder artists have been criss-crossing the major metropolitan areas of both American coasts this week in advance of Thundercat’s upcoming The Golden Age of Apocalypse. Flying Lotus, whose output thus far has brought us the term “post-Dilla,” has forced the beatmaking community to reckon with a new approach to noise and rhythm, with downbeat punctuated by a sense of uncertainty and samples coated in hiss. His production credit on the new Thundercat album is palpable from the few songs that have been posted online already; they take the smooth keyboard workouts from FlyLo’s Cosmogramma and air them out with reverb and wobbly basslines. Complex caught their set last night in Williamsburg and was thoroughly blown away; snatch up tickets to this West Coast gig while you can, cause they won’t last.—Finn Cohen
