For years, Matthew McConaughy has kept himself in a very comfortable zone, playing many similar characters in crappy romantic comedies. Earlier this year, though, he stepped out of that area a bit with the surprise hit The Lincoln Lawyer, and his next project seems to continue his uphill climb back to unconditional respectability. According to Deadline, McConaughey will join Hilary Swank for the drug-minded drama The Dallas Buyer's Club.
In the real-life tale of Ron Woodroof, McConaughey will play the Texas electrician who gets diagnosed with AIDS and begins smuggling narcotics into the U.S. to help himself and other AIDS patients. Woodroof's actions put him on a collision course with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The news of this deal broke at the currently in progress Cannes Film Festival. Interestingly enough, the title of the movie refers to a group founded by Woodroof, composed of several thousand "buyers," who distributed AIDS medication to those in need.
There's no word on what role two-time Oscar winner Swank will play, but suffice it to say that she could be Woodroof's ride-or-die chick.
