Hearst Launches Digital Subscriptions via iTunes Store

No more paying for iPad editions one by one.

Hearst, one of the big three magazine publishers along with Conde Nast and Time Inc., has just become the first publisher to offer its magazine titles via iTunes' new digital subscriptions model. Starting with the July issues, customers will be able to subscribe to iPad editions of Hearst publications like Esquire, Popular Mechanics and Cosmopolitan for $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year.

Details on the terms of Hearst's deal with Apple were not made public, but Apple is said to still be getting the hefty 30 percent cut of all subscription revenue generated via iTunes. Previously, publishers had been pressing Apple to make certain information about iPad subscribers available to them, since the companies rely on such data to market their customers to advertisers. In the new deal, Hearst has apparently reached satisfying terms with Apple concerning subscriber data.
