There is nothing that the ego trip crew cannot do, and do well, from magazines and books to TV and stage shows. Last year, the gang launched the hip-hop documentary film series Under the Influence of ego trip, and it was such a hit that they returned with Under the Influence of ego trip Pt. 2 in February.

The series, which is co-curated by Andreas Vingaard and screened at Harlem's Maysles Institute, features carefully selected docs either made during or focused on the early hip-hop era. In February, ego trip put people on to Founding Fathers, a controversial doc about the role that DJs, emcees, and promoters in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan played in early hip-hop.

The second of three all-new monthly film programs is tomorrow night (Thursday, March 31) at 7:30 p.m., and it features Rap City (1988) and Writing On the Wall (1986). Ego trip member Chairman Mao explains why you can't miss this double-feature:

Rap City (1988)

"Rap City is a seldom screened take of the late '80s Philly rap scene via candid portraits of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Schoolly D, and Yvette Money. Great rare footage of the artists with their families (particularly memorable: Schoolly on Parkside and 52nd with his moms and neighborhood kids) and on stage (Jeff & Fresh Prince at the Spectrum; Yvette Money at the After Midnight). Cool man-on-the-street interviews with local rap fans as well. Filmmaker Glenn Holsten (check out his ego trip interview) will be in attendance for the post film Q&A."

Writing On the Wall (1986)

"Writing On the Wall is the story of Newark, N.J. graf writer Hakim, a.k.a Micah Kelly, and his VOS (Vandals On the Street) crew's quest for fame. Compelling story, great footage, and an incredible bonus: rare scenes with NYC graf legend KEO X-MEN (a.k.a. Lord Scotch, a.k.a. Scotch 79, artist/designer; brother of author Jonathan Lethem; renowned underground figure touted as the first white rapper in NYC) seen in the film as a youth running wild through Brick City during his VOS tenure. Filmmaker Sandra King, Micah HAKIM Kelly (check out his ego trip interview), and KEO X-MEN will be in attendance for the post film Q&A."
