#21: CHI MCBRIDE AS CYRUS IN THE FRIGHTENERS (1996)
Before The Lord of the Rings trilogy, New Zealand-born filmmaker Peter Jackson’s first collaboration with Hollywood was the financially unsuccessful The Frighteners. Starring Michael J. Fox as a paranormal investigator, the movie actually holds up as an irreverent and enjoyable ghost tale. One of the flick’s best attributes is character actor Chi McBride, who plays Cyrus, the ghost of a ’70s gangster. With his afro at full bloom, Cyrus assists Fox’s Frank Bannister without devolving into a trite Blaxploitation ripoff. He’s one bad, undead mutha.
