Not even comic book characters can avoid death and taxes. OK, maybe taxes, but after countless battles with mortal enemies, intergalactic super-races, and crazed African game hunters, there is always a chance that a hero or one of their loved ones may be killed in action. In Fantastic Four #587, which hits shelves today, Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, sees his flame extinguished while fighting off a horde of Negative Zone monsters. Thankfully, in the realm of comic books, death is more like a temporary vacation than a permanent state of being. Johnny will no doubt be resurrected in this series or another, and in the meantime he has a noble end that sparked our countdown of the 10 most memorable deaths in comics. At least he died for a good cause!
