Although the original version is pretty great, the remix takes the cake. Back when backpack rap and mainstream rap seemed as separate as red states and blue states, there was something mind-blowing about this all-star remix. In today's age of anything-goes collaboration the notion may seem a bit quaint, but Kanye really deserves credit for unifying rap in the first half of the decade, finally closing the chapter on a division that defined the late '90s. The soulful, piano-driven Nina Simone neck-snapper is one of the best early examples of creative cross-pollination, coming just months before Jay famously said, "If skills sold, then truth be told, I'd probably be, lyrically Talib Kweli."
