Wikipedia tells us that "a hot dog is a sausage served in a sliced bun. It is commonly garnished with mustard, ketchup, onions, mayonnaise, relish or sauerkraut." Sure. We're with that. And if you're looking for the simplest of dogs, there are a number of places on this list that will satisfy your needs. But if you want to experience next-level hot dog design, places where the franks are done up Italian-American style and cooked in pizza dough, or prepped with the rigorousness of highbrow cuisine, this list might excite you more.
We're all coming down off the 4th of July high. But probably you weren't at a BBQ where the hot dogs were topped with brisket. For that sort of spin, please proceed directly through Complex's list of the 25 Best Hot Dog Shops in the U.S.

May I add to this two things: 1. Doug serves up the best veggie dog ever (get it grilled). 2. Doug Sohn is one of the nicest guy on the planet. He deserves this title & he deserves his success.

Much props to Doug! Well deserved! I go see Doug everytime I return to Chicago, and no matter the wait, it's always worth it. Great job Doug!

As I was going down the list, I was thinking, "If they don't put Hot Doug's on here, I'm gonna RAGE." Then, as I got closer to #1, I was certain that it was going to be left off the list. It's nice to see that it's getting the praise it deserves. Not only do they have the best dogs/sausages, but on Friday and Saturday, you can get your fries cooked in duck fat. DUCK FAT, people. And yes, it's as good as it sounds.

Although I am happy for Hot Dougs, Gene and Judes deserves to be much higher on that list...

An egregious error has occurred. When I first met my wife in Athens, Ohio, she kept telling me we had to go to this "gourmet hot dog shop". The idea seemed absolutely absurd. In my mind, "gourmet hot dog" was an oxymoron, comparable to benevolent fascist. Eventually I capitulated and we went to O'Betty's Red Hot. (http://www.obettys.com/) It was nothing short of a religious experience. They serve Five Star dogs (all natural casing) for a snap that no other hot dog that I have found can replicate. The restaurant is at once burlesque themed and likely the smallest restaurant you have ever been in. They have dogs like the Syra (grilled bun, sauteed mushrooms, shredded swiss, and mayo) and the Go Man Go (grilled bun, bacon, cheddar, mango bbq salsa (care of Casa Nueva across the street)). I have been to Monster Dog, Dirty Franks, and Hot Doug's. All are undoubtedly great, but this omission is unforgivable. Go to O'Betty's, beware the Tempest (unless you enjoy food pain) and see the light. - Dan Sherwood - Columbus, Ohio
