For Surface Magazine's "Design Dialogues" series, Kanye West and architect Jacques Herzog took to the stage to have a discussion about design, masculinity, and various other topics that grew out of the conversation organically. Hans Ulrich Obrist served as the moderator between the two men as they engaged in a very deep and quotable exchange of ideas and experiences. Obviously we can't provide a complete transcript of the discussion since it is still underway, but here are some quotes (mostly from Kanye) from the Twitter and Instagram posts of those in attendance:

  • "If I like it, I like it. No one can tell me who I like or what I'm supposed to be."- Kanye West
  • "Contrary to popular belief, I'm not in touch with my femininity." - Kanye West
  • "When exactly is the moment when you feel at home with what you do? It's hard to tell."- Jacques Herzog
  • "That's one of the things I found out with Yeezus, that I do have a voice."- Kanye West
  • "I found my own language in the noise, from which we all want to scream out."- Kanye West
  • "There is in our society a culture with no difference between disciplines."- Jacques Herzog
  • "A lot of people who create have, from age two, some connection to the Zeitgeist, and that's how these trends happen." - Kanye West
  • "When I see kids' Tumblrs, I see them screaming for a moment that isn't there."- Kanye West
  • "Architecture should respond to all the five senses."- Jacques Herzog
  • "Don't be afraid to ask questions to a person who's an expert."- Kanye West
  • "When I was in art school I would paint music because I could see it."- Kanye West
  • "Once you're dead, something might stay, like a song or a building."- Jacques Herzog
  • "You're seeing a reality show of my thoughts right now"- Kanye West
