In Next Stop Atlantic Stephen Mallon captures what happens to retired subway cars. This surreal series of photographs artfully recounts the cars’ journey from trail yard to sea barge. The photographers spend over three years chronicling the last phase of NYC Transit’s involvement in the artificial reef-building program (started in 2000). These sad, pieces of 18-ton metal are stripped, decontaminated and then thrown overboard into the Atlantic Ocean to create a refuge for many species of fish and crustaceans. [BeautifulDecay]
