Based in New Haven, CT, Adrien Broom is a self-taught photographer with a background in art history and computer animation. She skillfully merges all three interests in bizarre and beautiful works that explore the connection of Western culture and nature. She tells stories, sometimes easy, often hard, but always intriguing.

Outside of personal projects, Broom has also shot editorial projects for Rolling Stone and Nylon. W magazine recently named her a photographer to watch. So, we're watching and in this portfolio review share Broom's thoughts about some of her most recent photographs.

The work shown here, Inner Dialogue / Self Portrait, comes from a project Broom is working on with friend and glass artist Charlotte Potter investigating how to properly capture communication.

Yin & Yang Over Tea

Pretty sure this was a real Skeleton, used at RISD for drawing classes.

Lady of shallot

Based on the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. I love all the painters interpretations of this poem and wanted to try my own.

Above

Part of a series I did exploring movement. I shot this in a cove, leaning over the model in the water.

If You Don't Know Where You're Going, Any Road Will Get You There

I keep a notebook with me at all times to remember if I see something or a location I'd like to explore. I found this tree while walking my dog and fell in love with it.

Blurred Lines

This road is near where I grew up, another note in the book of places I'd love to shoot. It floods for about 3 days every spring. One year I finally timed it right.

Chapters

Part of that same series based around a child's imagination and the worlds explored when left alone in their room. This is one of them, shot in winter.

Fishing For Compliments

I'm in love with the small figures made for train models or architectural scaling... but that's a whole other story.

Home

Part of a series I'm working on based around a child's imagination and the worlds explored when left alone in their room. We built this room in the woods near a rescue farm who let us borrow their animals. The donkey was awesome,

Horizon Lines

Shot on a trip to Cuba. They were burning brush on the side of the road while a storm was rolling in. One of the most ominous sites I've ever seen.
