Shooting Leaves Police Officer Dead in Florida

Authorities say a police officer was fatally shot in Tarpon Springs, Fla. this morning. 

According to the Associated Press, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that the shooting happened around 3 a.m. The Orlando Sentinel adds that Cecilia Berreda, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office, said that a suspect is in custody. 

The New York Times reports that the officer and the suspect's names have not been released, but noted that the suspect crashed a vehicle into a utility police while attempting to flee the scene. What's more, a motive for the shooting also has yet to be identified.

Details are sparse, but the Sentinel says the Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident.
