The words “badass” and “hero” get thrown around a lot these days, but we are 100 percent confident in saying that Louis Zamperini had those qualities, and then some. He’s the subject of the movie Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie and adapted from the best-selling novel by Laura Hillenbrand.
Based on a true story, Zamperini (portrayed by rising star Jack O’Connell) finished eighth in the 5000 meter race at the 1936 Summer Olympics and set the national collegiate record for fastest mile time before joining the Air Force in 1941. Flying in World War II, he survived a plane crash and 47 days adrift at sea before being caught by the Japanese and thrown into a prison camp. Once he was there, he was beaten and tormented for about two and a half years until the war ended and he finally returned home.
So, basically, this guy is a lot tougher than us.
