A gunman was killed during a shootout with police after opening fire outside of a north Georgia courthouse this morning, authorities say.

CNN reports that a man reportedly armed with an assault rifle and explosives shot a Forsyth County Sheriff's deputy who prevented him from trying to storm the Cumming, Ga. courthouse. Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper told CNN that the man planned to take hostages once inside the building.

Though Robin Regan, spokesperson for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, wouldn't confirm the reports to CNN, she did tell them that shots were fired, adding that the area is now secure. According to Piper, the wounded deputy is recovering.
