Both 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2 had huge box office openings yesterday, but only one could come out on top. And according to Collider, the Channing Tatum/Jonah Hill comedy was triumphant. 22 Jump Street earned a staggering $25 million on Friday, while How to Train Your Dragon 2 pulled off an impressive $18.5 million.
Both sequels improved greatly on their predecessor’s opening numbers. 21 Jump Street had an opening weekend debut of just over $36 million; meanwhile, the first How to Train Your Dragon took in about $43.7 million. Some observers expected more from How to Train Your Dragon 2, but an estimated $53 million weekend is still impressive, regardless.
We’ll have the official three-day opening numbers when they are released.
