After years of speculation and endless rumors, it was officially announced today that director Roland Emmerich will be back at the helm of a new Stargate movie for MGM and Warner Bros. Emmerich, who directed the original Stargate back in 1994, is planning for this reboot to be the launching pad of a new trilogy of Stargate films. In a statement, Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin had this to say about the project:

“The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.”

There is no word on how/if this movie will tie into any of the existing Stargate TV shows, but fans should prepare themselves for a complete re-do of everything. Emmerich and Devlin are also currently reheating another of their favorites from the ‘90s with an Independence Day sequel at Fox.
