A New York teenager had his arm severed from the elbow down in a freak accident at a northern New York Italian restaurant earlier this week.

According to the Associated Press, Brett Bouchard, 17, was cleaning the pasta-making machine at Violi's Restaurant in Massena, N.Y. when his right arm got caught on Thursday evening. He was rushed to Massena Memorial Hospital, then flown to Massachusetts General Hospital for surgery. His condition was upgraded to serious as of this morning.

Mia Violi, the restaurant's manager, told the Watertown Daily Times that she and the rest of the staff are still trying to figure out how the machine was turned on as Bouchard cleaned it.

Co-owner Ross Violi told the Daily Times that Bouchard had blood flow in his right hand after the first attempt to reattach his arm.
