After years of false starts and rumors it looks like Universal is finally moving forward with a big screen version of Battlestar Galactica. According to Variety, the studio has hired Transcendence writer Jack Paglen to draft the screenplay. The movie was originally rumored to go into production in 2009 with Bryan Singer at the helm. But with Singer being so busy with the new X-Men movies, there is no word on whether or not that is still possible.

There have been multiple Battlestar Galactica TV series over the years, with the most significant coming to TV in 2003 on the Sci-Fi Channel. The story revolves around humanity’s war against the cybernetic Cylons. But above that, the series also tackled social and political themes that dug deeper than most sci-fi TV shows.

There is no word yet where the movie would take its inspiration from, so there is no way of knowing if any of the TV cast will be involved at all.
