Fruitvale Stations most underrated star, Melonie Diaz, has been cast as the lead in the upcoming HBO drama, Laughs Unlimited. The show, if you're wondering, should have very much the opposite of unlimited laughs: It's reportedly about a war veteran and his struggle with post traumatic stress disorder. According to Deadline, this project has been in development with HBO for a year and a half.

Laughs Unlimited is created by Oren Moverman, writer and director of Rampart and The Messenger, and Anthony Swofford, who wrote the book Jarhead. Deadline sums up the plot as so:

It centers on Army Reserve medic Billie Crown (Diaz) who, after fifteen months as a combat medic in Afghanistan, discovers that “real life” is just as perilous as war. Duty as a Sacramento cop offers the same dangers and thrills as combat, and repairing relationships with her husband and young daughter is as difficult as saving a comrade after an IED attack.

As far as the name Laughs Unlimited for a show with obviously macabre subject matter is concerned, there's a comedy club in Sacramento called "Laughs Unlimited."

Coincidence?
