Upcoming cross-platform first-person sneaker Thief is the latest game to announced that it will launch with different resolutions for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The dreaded “resolutiongate” continues for Microsoft.
While the PS4 version of Thief will run at 1080p, its Xbox One counterpart was designed at 900p and will be up-scaled to a larger size. What does that mean for you? Game director Nicolas Cantin says not very much. “You really need good eyes to see the difference,” he said. Also that the Xbox One version “is as good as the PS4 version.”
Microsoft and Xbox One have taken a lot of heat recently over the so-called “resolutiongate” used to describe the difference in graphical quality of the two systems. While nearly all PlayStation games are designed at a higher resolution – called the native resolution – many Xbox One games have been released at a lower resolution and scaled up. Call of Duty: Ghosts for instance and most recently Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes would both output at much the much lower resolution of 720p.
"As developers, no," Cantin continued. "As engineers, yeah. The engineers, for sure. But for us, as creative director or art director or level designer, we gave the same data. After that it's a more technological aspect of the game. The engineers have to manage that."
Future games will release in the higher resolution for both systems. We're still very much in the beginning of this generation's launch. What do you think? Is the resolution difference between these early games a selling point for you?
