It was -21°F in Viroqua, Wisc. with a windchill of -51°F, and Holthaus braved the cold with a pot of boiling water, which he hurled into the morning air. It immediately turned into snow.
Because Holthaus loves science, he shared the process of his little trick:
Be lucky it's not that cold wherever you are, unless it is.
