A man accused of conning his ex-girlfriend into taking abortion pills last year has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars for killing their six-week-old fetus.

On Monday, 29-year-old John Andrew Welden was sentenced to 13 years and eight months behind bars by a federal judge in Tampa, Fla. Welden and 27-year-old Remee Jo Lee had been in a seven-month relationship when she learned that she was expecting last February. While she was excited about being a mother, Welden urged her to get an abortion. Perhaps he thought it would derail his sports medicine studies, which jail time will certainly do.

Welden's father, an obstetrician, confirmed the pregnancy. Welden told her that a bacterial infection had been discovered during blood work and gave her what she thought was Amoxicilin. The antibiotic turned out to be Cytotec pills, which forced Lee to experience vaginal bleeding. After being rushed to the hospital, doctors informed her that she had suffered a miscarriage as a result of Cyotec.

Welden confessed to removing lettering on the pills that would've identified them as Cyotec. In addition to his jail sentence, a judge ordered him to pay Lee $30,000 in restitution, and he will placed on three years probation following his release.
