On Saturday, 29-year-old Long Island resident Timothy Schiavo, Jr. attempted to board a JetBlue flight with over a dozen knives, a dozen lighters, five pairs of scissors and the most random inclusion of all: Utz pretzel pub mix. Police spotted the weapons at the Terminal 5 screening area of JFK International Airport. When authorities approached Schiavo about the contents of his bag, he explained that he was a knife collector.
The TSA allows passengers to fly with knives and scissors, but they must be packed into luggage, not carry-on bags. Lighters are banned from all flights.
According to his mother, Josephine Prybyzerski, Schiavo suffers from a developmental disorder. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon; the investigation is ongoing.
