All hot sauce and salsa purchases should be under strict scrutiny in the wake of a recently UNLV study. Researchers found alarming amounts of lead in four imported salsa brands: Salsa HabaneraEl PatoSalsa PicanteBufalo Salsa Clasica and Salsa Picante de Chile Habanero.

The study also revealed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has no method for figuring out what an unsafe level of lead is. However, researchers did note that the amounts were greater than the 0.1 parts of lead per million deemed safe for candy consisting of similar spicy ingredients sold in the United States.

Before you start crying into your bowl of salsa, know that UNLV's researchers tested 25 imported hot sauce brands and only detected problems in those four. Tests will continue, and this research team will assist the FDA in determining a safe lead level for hot sauce moving forward.
