Sorry Harlem, that wasn't cinnamon buns being baked that you smelled this morning. Per the New York CityOffice of Emergency Management, a gas pipeline was being updated, and rather subject the area to that unpleasant scent, they opted for that of cinnamon. The welcoming odor floated through the air on West 134 Street from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., and OEM spokesman Christopher Miller stated that it was simply a "masking agent used to cover the scent of mercaptan."
Mercaptain is what's added to natural gas so that people will be able to notice a leak. Bless the hearts of the OEM for thinking of the people and their sensitive noses.
