With an ambitious (yet corny) name like "Operation Weed Whacker," your marijuana-removal project had better hit its mark. According to drug officials in Montgomery County, PA, the initiative was established to seize at least a million dollars worth of marijuana that was moving freely throughout the area's black market. The dealers targeted were responsible for bringing over 3,670 pounds of marijuana to the area in the past year or so.
Following the yearlong wiretap that Lester Freamon would've been proud of, Dennis Frederick, Jeffrey Frederick and Charles Sadrin of Lincoln, CA were all arrested. All three were charged with the manufacture, delivery and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy. Five others were charged, and Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman is calling it one of the county's biggest busts ever.
The marijuana was being shipped from California over a 15 to 16 month period, and the 3,673 pounds were moving at a rate of $4,000 a pound. So basically, they made about $14.5 million during that period. Damn.
Lawyers for the defendants appear to be taking the old "it's only pot" route. That's probably more effective when you aren't dealing with millions of dollars made off of drug deals.
