Just when it seemed to be improving.
Twelve people were shot over a six-hour period in Chicago on Friday leaving one person dead. The violence began just after 8 p.m. when two men—ages 23 and 44—were shot by a man who asked them for directions. The younger man was hit in the chest, while the older man was struck once in the hand while trying to escape. According to the Cook County medical examiner's office, the younger man died at the scene.
Between Friday night and early Saturday morning, 10 other people were shot in the city, though none of the shootings were fatal. This news comes just as it was reported that Chicago's murder rate had reached its lowest since the 1950s. The year began with a record-high for homicides in January, but the homicides dropped in both February and March. However, everyone from police to politicians are fearing the arrival of warm weather, as violent crime tends to rise with the temperature.
Let's hope we aren't witnessing the start of the trend.
