On Monday, a woman was stopped by TSA while trying to board a flight at Dulles International Airport because an X-ray scanner noticed that there was a sword hidden inside of her cane. According to the Associated Press, the woman had no idea she was actually carrying a concealed weapon.
TSA says this happens far more often than you'd expect, but they're still taking the necessary precautions to make sure it happens less:
TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says it's not uncommon for people to unwittingly carry canes that conceal weapons. The agency sent out an advisory Wednesday suggesting passengers with canes try to unscrew the top before heading out to the airport, just in case.
The woman was allowed to board her flight and won't face any charges, but her cane was confiscated.
