Sure, Oscars commentary is full of snarky jokes—some are all in good fun, some maybe not so much. Satirical paper The Onion usually hits the nail on the head with the right amount of outrageous to make a point. Tonight though, their tweet about youngest-Best-Actress-nominee-ever Quvenzhané Wallis fell flat. Really flat.

The tweet was taken down after an hour. Obviously, they meant it as a joke, but come on. The Wire's Wendell Pierce was not pleased.

“@theonion: Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a cunt, right? >And you should get your ass kicked
@theonion I will never lose the ability to be offended and let anyone verbally abuse a child. Especially a child of my community in NOLA
@thesteamer We should never allow someone to call a child a C___. I don't care if was an attempt at a joke. Maybe that's ok with you. Not me

Film critic Devin Faraci thought people were taking it too seriously.

Was the Onion joke good? Not really. But if you think they were actually calling her a cunt you're a moron.
"The Onion tweeted something, so I should take it TOTALLY AT FACE VALUE."

Let's just say a good rule of thumb is, don't call a 9-year-old with a collection of puppy purses the c-word, even in jest.

UPDATE: They apologized
