"Mama" Tops Weekend Box Office, "The Last Stand" Tanks

Sorry, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Surprisingly, the Jessica Chastain-starring horror film Mama managed to top the box office this weekend and knock out Arnold Schwarzenegger's new film The Last Stand - all the way to 10th place. According to Deadline, despite earning a 'B' Cinemascore from audiences, the former California governor's action film earned a measly $6.7 million this weekend, and doesn't look to be improving any time soon.

As for Mama, the film opened in 1st place with an impressive $28.1 million earned between Friday to Sunday. Studio execs reportedly weren't expecting such a big turnout for Mama, which was filmed with a relatively low budget and only had the title of "presented by Guillermo del Toro" to back it up. "This is an incredible result for a little film. We think it was the advertising on Twilight[Breaking Dawn Part 2] and the really scary trailer targeted to girls," a studio executive commented.

Chastain's other film in the box office, Oscar contender Zero Dark Thirty, took in $17.6 million to nab the second spot, and fellow Oscar contender Silver Linings Playbook came in third with $11.35 million.

Also opening this weekend was the Mark Wahlberg- Russell Crowe-starring action flick Broken City - unfortunately, that only managed to nab the fifth place spot with $9.1 million, just in front of last week's Gangster Squad which pulled in $9 million.
