If you bought a $5 foot-long using your credit card from Subway between 2009 and 2011, you were at risk at having your information stolen by two Romanian hackers.Ars Technica is reporting that two men, Iulian Dolan, 28, of Craiova, Romania, and Cezar Iulian Butu, 27, of Ploiesti, Romania, hacked into credit-card terminals at more than 150 Subway restaurants and stole data for 146,000 accounts.
Both men pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit credit card fraud, and admitted to helping a man named Adrian-Tiberiu Opera, who Dolan referred to as the ring leader of the group, search the Net for terminals to hack. According to Dolan's testimony on Monday, he stole payment data from over 6,000 cardholders. He's been sentenced to seven years in prison, while Butu, who said in a plea agreement that he only stole data from 140 cardholders, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison. Opera, according to Ars Technica, is still in U.S. Custody.
It was all good just 52 weeks ago.
