It has been about seven weeks since App.net launched their Twitter clone. App.net got off the ground running with funding of $550k from over 7,500 users. The goal of App.net according to founder Dalton Caldwell is: To create a better, developer-and-user-supported (and ad-free) alternative to Twitter. Compared to Twitter which is free, App.net is a subscription based network.
Caldwell recently announced some recent milestones of App.net. In seven weeks the site has over 250k posts from over 17,500 paying users. The Next Web also announced the launch of the App.net's first dedicated iOS client in the Apple App Store. Recent Twitter changes to monetize the network has created a strain on the relationship between Twitter and developers. Being subscription based, App.net encourages third-party apps and grants developers access to an API unlike Twitter.
