It's the sort-of-sequel nobody knew that they wanted. Revisiting Knocked Up's troubled couple played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, writer-director Judd Apatow is continuing his thematic maturation with This Is 40, which looks and feels like a dramedy in the vein of his last film, Funny People.
Much like Knocked Up, the supporting cast is aces, with Albert Brooks on board to play Rudd's father, Chris O'Dowd (Kristen Wiig's love interest in Bridesmaids) as Rudd's buddy, and both Lena Dunham and Bridesmaids breakout Melissa McCarthy, not to mention Megan Fox in lingerie (per the trailer, at least). And considering how well he balanced hilarity with heartfelt character development in Knocked Up and its predecessor, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Apatow's examination of how the big 4-0 presents a pivotal, emotionally fragile crossroads for adults promises to bring tenderness and belly laughs in equal measure. Even if you're barely even 20.
