Now that we have your attention, this ad, which features a woman nonchalantly pissing on a rug, is for The Standard Hotel. It's part of a new campaign that plays on acceptable hotel behavior, grabbing attention by figuratively slapping people in the face—or peeing on their rug, rather.
According to the Times, other ads feature a woman drooling into a bowl of soup and a man's head down a woman's shirt. They're reportedly the work of Austrian artist Erwin Wurm, and here's how The Standard explained their new marketing technique:
"Wurm tackles our heightened fearfulness following the events of 9/11. Threats on national and international security have made us more sensitive to our personal space and freedoms. An invasion of personal and private space is documented in this work. Wurm seems to be making fun of how much we have accepted intrusion into our private lives. Despite the lightheartedness of this series, these works of art have a serious intent and are a social and political critique of our changing world."
That, or they just want to shock people. Expect a spike in carpet pissing.
