At first we weren’t quite sure why Marvel/Disney re-released The Avengers into theaters this past weekend, but now there is little doubt about the motivations behind it. According to Deadline, with the $2.2 million that the movie took in over the Labor Day holiday, The Avengers finally crossed the $1.5 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

It is now the third-highest grossing movie of all time just behind Avatar and Titanic. Although those numbers are very impressive, inflation and premium 3D ticket prices aren’t figured into these totals, so Avengers would still trail behind plenty of flicks when all of that is taken into consideration. Still, this is a mammoth haul for Marvel, and it will surely make the release of the sequel all the more interesting.
