A 92-year-old World War ll veteran killed an intruder with a single shot from his rifle in his Verona, KY, home. Earl Jones, who had been the victim of three previous break-ins this year, fired his .22-caliber rifle at Lloyd "Adam" Maxwell, 24, as he and two other men snuck into his home through the basement door. "I aimed right for his heart," said Jones, adding, "I didn't go to war for nothing. I have the right to carry a gun. That's what I told the police."

Jones waited in a chair upstairs before shooting Maxwell, and the two other men dragged his lifeless body out of the house. Police caught up with them and arrested them for burglary and tampering with evidence. The mother of one of the suspects says she understands Jones's decision to defend his home, but characterized her son and the two other men as "little boys" who got hooked on heroin.
