It may have taken forever, but Spotify’s iPad app was finally released today and upon first impression, it’s time well spent by the developers.
For one, the layout is a lot sleeker than the clunky, (overly) iTunes-inspired desktop version. Optimized for the iPad’s touchscreen, the app is organized in stacked pages, with album artwork central to the navigation. And keeping in mind the iPad’s form factor, the app is compatible with AirPlay-equipped speakers, essentially turning your iPad into a remote control.
Overall, music discovery is the aim here—the “What’s New” page greets users with trending playlists and songs, as well as recommended music. The “People” tab lists your Facebook friends—their profile pics comprising icons—and clicking through to each reveals top tracks, artists, and published playlists.
As expected a premium subscription will be required to use the app, despite being a free download. And shorn of thrid-party apps like Last.fm, there's room for improvement.
