Digg is taking a step closer to the grave as it was announced today that the site's technology team has been acqui-hired by The Washington Post. The national daily will absorb Digg's developers in order to bolster its own social news efforts (i.e. their popular Facebook plugin).
Digg had been looking to sell itself outright for some time, but under this new deal only a part of the company will be moving. The remaining management will keep the news discovery site running for now, and is reportedly "exploring its options."
Once a key influencer behind some of the Web's most viral content, Digg's prominence has declined steadily in recent years. Today, site's like Reddit and BuzzFeed have largely stepped into that role.
