The 10 Best Movies Complex Saw At The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival

3. UNA NOCHE

Director:Lucy Mulloy
Stars:Dariel Arrechada, Anailin de la Rua de la Torre, Javier Nuñez Florian

The central premise of first-timer Lucy Mulloy’s Una Noche isn’t anything revolutionary: Set in the impoverished streets of Havana, Cuba, the NYU graduate’s debut feature follows a day in the life of three teenagers (all of which are strongly acted by Dariel Arrechada, Anailin de la Rua de la Torre, and Javier Nunez), two of which are determined to defect from their homeland on a self-made raft directed toward Miami.

The real sources of impact throughout the subtly powerful Una Noche, rather, are Mulloy’s ground-level capturing of real-life Cuba. The assured and, most importantly, gifted director presents a vibrant yet faintly dangerous city that, while not as viscerally resonant as the Rio de Janeiro of 2002’s City of God, is incredibly authentic.
