Hackers at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin announced plans to build an “uncensorable internet in space,” dubbed the “Hackerspace Global Grid,” via a network of satellites and communicating ground stations.

Citing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) as a looming threat to a free Internet, hacktivist Nick Farr outlined the collective’s mission, stating, “Let’s take the internet out of the control of terrestrial entities.”

The initiative would be the largest amateur orbital mission, which the group intends to eventually usurp by putting an amateur astronaut onto the moon by 2035.
