East Haven, Connecticut mayor Joseph Maturo was interviewed by a local news reporter yesterday in the wake of the arrests of four East Haven police officers who are suspected of abusing their power and, according to the Hartford Courant, discriminating against Latinos. Considering how serious of a subject this is, one would think that Maturo would demonstrate a bit of tact when it comes to discussing the situation. One would think.
Instead, when asked by WPIX reporter Mario Diaz about what he is doing for the Latino community, Maturo's response was more along the lines of, "I might have tacos when I go home." As in, that was exactly what he said.
Diaz is visibly stunned when Maturo continues to ramble on about how he has spent two years in Puerto Rico and "will probably do the same for the Latino community."
"You realize," Diaz interjects, "that's not really the comment to say right now, 'you might have tacos tonight.'"
Maturo keeps digging himself deeper into that hole, replying, "I might have spaghetti tonight! Being of Italian descent, I could go out and have - I have had ethnic food - and when you asked me what I was doing for Latinos tonight, I may go out and have a Latino dinner in the Latino community. There's nothing wrong with that!" Yes, this is verbatim.
"And you can twist it or turn it whichever way the press decides to do," Maturo adds at the end, which is funny considering he's totally already done that on his own for us. You can watch a full video of Maturo continuing his bout of verbal vomit here.
He has since apologized for the comments, admitting on a morning radio show that it was an "insensitive and stupid answer" to give. Indeed, it was.
