Since its launch in January of this year, Apple's Mac App Store has already surpassed 100 million unique downloads, making the Cupertino company the largest software retailer in the US.

The Mac App Store was modeled after Apple's similarly lucrative iOS App Store and delivers new software, including the latest version of OSX, instantly and over the air.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft recently announced that it will launch a similar app store to go along with its upcoming Windows 8 operating system.
