In the two years since Up was released in theaters, Pixar has pretty much ignored the human race for the most part. Toy Story 3 and Cars 2 were both more concerned with talking hunks of plastic than flesh-and-blood characters, so when it was announced that Brave would feature humans again, most people were pleasantly surprised.
Taking place in the Highlands of Scotland, Brave is about a young girl named Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) who wants to shrug off the traditional role of a female by becoming a fierce warrior, but her actions unleash something terrible upon the kingdom. Along with the strong voice-acting by Macdonald, the rest of the cast is rounded out by an ensemble of great actors, such as Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, and Craig Ferguson.
The plot of the film certainly differs from recent Pixar films because it looks more character focused and grounded than their previous efforts. There also doesn't seem to be a reliance on cartoon stereotypes like talking animals or grotesque monsters; in fact, Brave looks like it could be the most realistic Pixar film yet. Well, as realistic as a CGI cartoon can get anyway.
With how long it takes to animate these films, it's no surprise that this debut trailer is a little sparse when it comes to big laughs and story elements. But Pixar's track record has been near flawless for over a decade now, so it's almost guaranteed that Brave will be well worth watching when it comes out on June 22, 2012.
